We all have a commitment to our local community. Whether this is to improve the area we live in or to create a lasting positive impact benefits everybody. To achieve this ourselves, we nominate and sponsor different York-based charities each year.
For 2018 we’ve chosen Wetwheels; a charity that works closely with people that have disabilities. Throughout our fundraising journey, we’re going to take part in exciting challenges, bake delicious food and generally make fools out of ourselves.
So what is Wetwheels?
Due to the lack of opportunities available, research has found that 80% of people with disabilities has previously not had access to the sea. Leading to particular challenges in developing confidence, self-belief, self-worth and independence.
To overcome this, Geoff Holt MBE, the first quadriplegic yachtsman to sail solo around Great Britain, created The Wetwheels Foundation. A charity that utilises and builds specially modified and fully accessible powerboats. Creating hope and building confidence for disabled participants to part in sea-related activity.
Describing the charity, Geoff Holt said, “Wetwheels gives me the greatest pleasure. Over the years I have witnessed thousands of disabled people from all ages being enjoy being on water. It doesn’t matter if that is on a sailboat or a motor boat; it is being on the water that makes the difference. Judging from the smiles, I think we’ve found a winning formula.”
Completion for York’s first specialised Catamaran is predicted for May 2018. Creating new opportunities for those who live near this area to enjoy an amazing day out. Visit their website here to find out more charity.
We hope you’ll support and join us throughout the course of the next twelve months to help raise awareness of this fantastic cause.
Don’t miss out!
